God it has taken me forever to finish anything, but now that I am done with my undergraduate I can actually write some reviews of books. So let's start with this collection of the first three books in the OZ series: The Wizard of Oz, The Marvelous Land of Oz, and Ozma of Oz.
The Wizard of Oz: [3 Stars]
For people who are fans of the amazing film, I can not say that this book is really for you. I mean there are similarities in terms of general content: Dorothy gets transported to Oz, meets her three new friends, is transported home in silver shoes to Kansas. It's the details that make this book very different. It is hard when an adaptation has evolved to a point where the source material becomes almost bad in comparison to the film.
Now, let me clarify, the book is not bad. It is a very nice children's book with some dark bits, but overall is a very simplistic tale. But the film is in some respects more fun and more emotionally touching than the book. If you come into reading this expecting the movie then you will be bitterly disappointed, but if you come in without that stigma it is enjoyable. Just do not expect an overwhelmingly deep story. It is a cute little tale, not a theological adventure like Narnia or Dark Materials.
The Marvelous Land of Oz: [2 1/2 Stars]
Of the three stories in this collection, MLZ is perhaps the weakest simply because there is a protagonist, Tip, that we have no connection to at all. It reminds me of the second book in HDM when Will arrived and I was like "who the hell is this?" I wanted Dorothy and that made this book effort because I knew she was coming back in the next book.
Ozma of Oz: [4 Stars]
This was my favorite one. I loved all the characters, the story and the villain. The only thing that threw me off was Dorothy's sudden dialect and there were times when it would go away then return depending on the situation. Dorothy gets separated from her Uncle during a fierce storm on their way to Australia. She, along with Billina the hen, are transported to the Land of Ev where they are reconnected with old friends and have to rescue the royal family of Ev from the Nome King.
To me, this story was my "Wizard of Oz" because I did not have the expectations coming into it so was an enjoyable read through and through.
Enjoyable, however, does not mean that it was an extraordinary read and I appreciate the strong female characters in it. The heroines in these books are always women and they are not sword wielding warriors either, they are just girls who get stuck in situations and do their best to get out of it.
