Read full description of the books:
Before the story begins, note to whom Ms. O'Day dedicates her book, and then tell me this poor lady, so rich in talent, didn't have one sad life.
On page 167 Anita writes, "But nobody has it all. Like me, Ella doesn't have a real good voice." I simply do not understand. These were two great vocalists.
The book is painful to read and concludes with what perhaps sums up Anita best, " . . . when I'm up there with my rhythm section . . . that's the time when I'm happiest . . . It's a different world when the music stops."
See the Anita O'Day Newport Jazz YouTube and weep; she was lovely and sensational, a BRILLIANT musician. As one critic notes on the DVD "Anita O'Day-The Life of a Jazz Singer" she was the Mozart of jazz, genius. When the world seems flat and mediocre, have a listen, or better yet, a listen and a look at Ms. O'Day. You don't want to miss her magnificent stage presence, her skill as an actress, her natural grace and movements, or her innate elegance . . . charm . . . intelligence . . . and dishy looks and style, style, style from a master stylist. The book, any book, can't capture that. Hardboiled dame? Marvelously so, but the feathers, gloves, and frock, soften the edges.
