The fourth book in the series featuring the irascible but loveable amateur sleuth Daniel Jacobus
Vaclav Herza, the last of a dying breed of great but tyrannical conductors, has been music director of Harmonium for forty years. The world famous touring orchestra was created for him when he fled Czechoslovakia for America during the political turmoil in Eastern Europe in 1956. It is the eve of the opening of a dramatic new concert hall designed by Herza himself. It is also the eleventh hour of intense contract negotiations with the musicians that have strained relations within the organization. When the acting concertmaster, Scheherazade O’Brien, is summarily dismissed by the despotic Herza for the permanent concertmaster position, an audition she was poised to win, O’Brien slits her wrists and the orchestra becomes convulsed. Now, blind, cantankerous violin teacher Daniel Jacobus, who had shunned O’Brien’s earlier plea for help against Herza’s relentless harassment, investigates Herza’s dark past not only in Prague, but in Tokyo and New York. With the help of his old friends Nathaniel Williams, Max Furukawa, and Martin Lilburn, he seeks not only revenge but redemption from the guilt of his own past.

Read information about the authorShhh! I'll let you in on a little secret. I've been leading a double life. My award-winning Daniel Jacobus mystery series is set in the dark corners of the classical music world, of which I am intimately familiar as a former violinist with the Boston Symphony, associate concertmaster of the Utah Symphony and as a conductor, composer, and teacher. The first novel in the series, “Devil’s Trill,” was a Barnes & Noble Discover: Great New Writers selection, and was followed by five additional critically acclaimed installments, most recently "Spring Break" in 2017. "Combining the deductive reasoning of Sherlock Holmes with the rhetorical finesse of Don Rickles," wrote Kirkus Review.
But I've branched out from there. My eclectic short stories and essays have graced prestigious journals and magazines on a variety of platforms. And for you mystery fans out there, you may be interested to know I have just launched a series of mini-volumes of short mysteries, called Mister E's Mysteries, that I have no doubt will take the literary world by storm.
I continue to expand my literary horizons even as I continue to perform around the world as a violinist. Recent projects include contemporary Western mysteries and audio books of the first two installments of the Jacobus series, "Devil's Trill" and "Danse Macabre," in which I also perform the music. And in 2017 I published my first memoir, “Symphonies and Scorpions,” a rare insider’s view of the world of a touring orchestral musician, set against the backdrop of historic concert tours to China by the Boston Symphony. If you thought fiction was hard to believe...
