This review will come in two parts as I have first read the book then gave it a 7 week trial.
My review after the reading the book on August 20, 2014
William Davis puts a very convincing case for cutting out wheat and all gluten containing products. If you are diabetic he will suggest further to cut all other carbs to an absolute minimum.
He does not differentiate between low GI and high GI carbs though which confused me a bit. Tossing oats, quinoa, beans, lentils, all potatoes and most fruit into the same pot.
I am confused as lentils have one of the lowest GI value possible.
I am also not sure about him saying that nuts, oils, etc you can have as much as you like. This always presupposes that the reader's "full meter" is working ok and they will not overeat on nuts. A body starved of carbs will often have such a reaction.
A few times through the book I got confused about his attitude toward dairy and meats. He mentions small amounts then says eat as much as you like, then says only have one serve of yoghurt per day but eat all the fatty cheese you like.

I have decided to give this meal plan a go for a while and will return to add to this review from my own experience with it.

ok, this next review was written on October 7, 2014.
I have faithfully stayed on the wheat free diet for 7 weeks. Not only did I not eat wheat, I also did not eat any gluten containing other grains, nor any other grains like rice or quinoa. I did not eat any potatoes, any legumes bar one tablespoon of white beans. I did not eat any non gluten replacement foods like corn flour or arrowroot or buckwheat. I have lived sugar and honey free for over 23 years already and never eat between meals - so no snacks either.
I also gave up diary 2 weeks into this - now 5 weeks off dairy and 7 weeks off
all grains and other starchy foods.
In addition I maintains my carb level at 15 grams per meal and 45 grams per day. This is total carbs not carbs minus dietary fiber.
I also do not take any of the medication the doctor says may interfere with the process.
In 7 weeks I have lost preceisely...
Wait for it...
Yes, not one pound.
Nothing at all.
Nope, nothing!

What I have lost is my entire energy to get through a days work.
What I also got is night time leg cramps so severe that I have to get up 8 - 10 times a night to walk around. And I am already on top supplements like magnesium, calcium, and potassium as well as multi vitamin and folic acid.

Rather diasppointing, considering the good docto's websites and facebook sites are full of people who are saying they lost up to 12 pounds in the first week!
Not my experience.
I also found it rather disappointing that it is impossible to reach Dr. Davis to ask him what I might try to remedy. I posted twice on facebook to try for an answer but no one got back to me there either.

Of course with 8 - 10 leg cramps per night I do not get any decent sleep which Dr. Davis could possibly use as an excuse for his diet plan not having worked for me. But my lack of sleep is not because I stay up late. The cramps disappear when I start eating carbs again. I tried Atkins in the past, also without success. Also with the side effect of cramps and itchy skin.

The only thing going for the wheat belly diet is that one's blood sugar levels really do normalise. But I believe this can be achieve through other means.
And without having to live of spinach leaves for breakfast and suffer debilitating leg cramps.

An additional word of warning for all women who want to try this diet. If you are planning to fall pregnant or there is a remote chance that you will fall pregnant in the near future, make sure you start taking folic acid now. Manufacturers add this to your bread and breakfast cereals to prevent birth defects in babies. On this diet you will not get enough folic acid to make a healthy baby!

I have reduced the original 3 star review to one star because for some people this seems to work and it did normalise my blood sugar level. Mind you I am not a diabetic yet, just have a slightly raised level and the genetic material to become one.
I can not recommend this diet to anyone other than people who really can't reduce their blood sugar levels any other way and even then only with great reservations.
My well-being has deteriorated severely during the last 7 weeks and the positive result in blood sugar level control does not outweigh this negative outcome.
